GIRLS: Challenges/Choices”, a documentary project by the NM Commission on the Status of Women, was recognized by the National Association of Commissions for Women with their 2006 Outstanding Achievement Award. The documentary focused on New Mexico’s teenage girls and the issues of body image, dating violence, depression, teen pregnancy, and substance abuse. The documentary broadcast on KOAT-TV Channel 7 on June 12, 2006.
The hour-long documentary, created by Christopher Productions and co-sponsored by the NM Children, Youth and Families Department, NM Public Education Department, the NM Department of Health, ValueOptions and the McCune Foundation, was a broadcasting-first for New Mexico. The documentary incorporated pre-recorded clips, text messages from girls around the state, an interactive live town hall audience and remote web cam participation from Farmington, Santa Fe, Roswell, Las Cruces and Taos.
In addition, the documentary was recognized by the National Academy for Television Arts and Sciences with the Rocky Mountain Emmy for Public/Current/Community Affairs Program or Special.
